Marine Litter: EU actions for the future of our Oceans
Marine Litter: EU actions for the future of our Oceans
13 October 2020
15.00 to 17.00
Marine litter is now widely acknowledged as one of the major threats we must overcome for our seas and oceans. Over the last few years, a great variety of initiatives and projects have been developed across the word to find solutions to save our marine ecosystem from this peril.
During the last mandate, our Intergroup worked hard to raise awareness of this challenge and potential solutions that the maritime community is working on developing. We supported the organisation of the Ocean Plastic Lab Exhibition in April 2018. We organised multiple conferences and workshops that were a great opportunity for members to engage with the European Commission, the research community and all relevant stakeholders to identify potential EU initiative that would contribute to put an end to marine litter.
Our Intergroup wants to pursue its efforts in contributing to the fight against marine litter, it is therefore with a great pleasure that we invite the CleanAtlantic project to present the outcomes of its work.
The partners of the CleanAltantic project have been working together for 3 years in order to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Atlantic by improving capabilities to monitor, prevent and remove marine litter. This event will be a great opportunity to learn more about the achievements of the project and exchange views on potential next steps to be taken at the Altantic and European level.

What is an Intergroup?
The Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup is one of the 27 Intergroups that were approved on 11 December 2019 by the Conference of Presidents for the 9th legislature of the European Parliament. Intergroups can be formed by MEPs from any political group and any parliamentary committee with a view to holding informal exchanges of views on particular issues and promoting contact between MEPs and civil society.
The Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup brings together more than 100 MEPs from 7 different political groups and 23 Member States.
Intergroups are not Parliament bodies and therefore may not express Parliament's opinion.
Intergroups are subject to internal rules adopted by the Conference of Presidents on 16 December 1999 (last updated on 11 September 2014), which set out the conditions under which intergroups may be established at the beginning of each parliamentary term and their operating rules.
