The maritime perspective of climate change
The European Parliament’s Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup organised a conference entitled “The maritime perspective of Climate change" with the support of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (secretariat of the Intergroup). This event took place in European Parliament during its Strasbourg session on October 29.
It was an excellent opportunity for the members to discuss the importance of including seas and oceans in the climate negotiations in the context of the COP21 in Paris. The Members of the Intergroup discussed with Prof. Dr. Latif from Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research, Dr. Chu from European Marine Board and the Surfrider Foundation.
“Our oceans are of crucial importance for the global climate. But neither water nor climate knows the meaning of borders. If we want to change course we have to work together – globally. And with its experience in integrated maritime policy the EU should be a forerunner, in particular to strengthen a sustainable blue economy” said Mrs. Meissner, chair of the Intergroup.
Prof. Dr. Latif stated that “Climate Change is accelerating and we must act now. What is needed is a global energy transformation, a de-carbonisation of the world economy during this century. We should rapidly abandon fossil fuels and invest more in renewable energies”.
On October 28, the Intergroup also welcomed the Aldebaran research ship in Strasbourg, on its way to the COP 21 in Paris. At this occasion MEPs Gesine Meissner (Germany), Tonino Picula (Croatia), Sofia Ribeiro (Portugal), Ulrike Rodust (Germany) and Ricardo Serrão Santos (Portugal) officially launched the Call of the Intergroup "Oceans for Climate" by proceeding to a symbolic handover of the call to the crew of the Aldebaran ship. In the coming weeks the members of the intergroup will disseminate this call to their national government and the European Commission.

L’Intergroupe Mers, Rivières, Iles et Zones Côtières (www.searica.eu) a organisé une conférence intitulée “La dimension maritime du Changement Climatique” avec le soutien de la Conférence des Régions Périphériques et Maritimes (secrétariat de l’Intergroupe). Cet évènement s’est déroulé au Parlement Européen pendant sa session strasbourgeoise le 29 Octobre.
Alors qu’approche la COP21 à Paris, les parlementaires membres de l’Intergroupe ont pu profiter de cette opportunité pour souligner l’importance de l’inclusion des mers et océans dans les négociations climatiques. Ils ont ainsi pu échanger avec le Prof. Dr. Latif du Centre de Recherche Océanique Helmholtz, le Dr. Chu représentant le European Marine Board ainsi que la Surfrider Foundation.
« Nos mers et océans revêtent une importance cruciale pour le climat. Mais l’eau, comme le climat, ignorent nos frontières. Si nous voulons changer le cours de choses nous devons donc travailler ensemble, à l’échelle mondiale. Et forte de son expérience de la Politique Maritime Intégrée, l’Union Européenne doit aujourd’hui saisir l’opportunité qui lui est offerte de se montrer exemplaire et force de proposition à l’échelle internationale, en particulier pour transformer le défi climatique en chance pour l’économie bleue » a déclaré Mme Meissner, présidente de l’Intergroupe.
Prof. Dr. Latif a expliqué que « le changement climatique s’accélère et nous devons agir dès aujourd’hui. Nous avons besoin d’une transformation globale de notre model énergétique, d’une décardonisation de l’économie mondiale. Nous devons abandonner rapidement les énergies fossiles et investir davantage dans les énergies renouvelables ».
La veille, l’Intergroupe avait déjà accueilli le bateau de recherche l’Aldebaran s’arrêtant à Strasbourg sur sa route depuis Hambourg vers Paris pour sensibiliser au changement climatique et à ses conséquences sur les océans. Les parlementaires Gesine Meissner (Allemagne), Tonino Picula (Croatie), Sofia Ribeiro (Portugal), Ulrike Rodust (Allemagne) et Ricardo Serrão Santos (Portugal) ont officiellement lancé l’appel de l’Intergroupe "Océans pour le Climat" en procédant à la remise symbolique de leur appel à l’équipage de l’Aldebaran. Mme Meissner a souligné, à cette occasion, le travail de Mme Isabelle Thomas qui a initié cet appel.
Dans les semaines à venir, les membres de l’Intergroupe transmettrons cet appel à leurs gouvernements ainsi qu’à la Commission Européenne.

What is an Intergroup?
The Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup is one of the 27 Intergroups that were approved on 11 December 2019 by the Conference of Presidents for the 9th legislature of the European Parliament. Intergroups can be formed by MEPs from any political group and any parliamentary committee with a view to holding informal exchanges of views on particular issues and promoting contact between MEPs and civil society.
The Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup brings together more than 100 MEPs from 7 different political groups and 23 Member States.
Intergroups are not Parliament bodies and therefore may not express Parliament's opinion.
Intergroups are subject to internal rules adopted by the Conference of Presidents on 16 December 1999 (last updated on 11 September 2014), which set out the conditions under which intergroups may be established at the beginning of each parliamentary term and their operating rules.
