Mediterranean Ecosystems in Danger: Enhancing EU policy response
Monitoring and addressing the increasing cumulative impacts of threats such as overfishing, marine litter, climate change and uncontrolled development to the Mediterranean environment is crucial to the management of healthy and productive ecosystems and to sustain the people that live on their resources.
The socio-economic mechanisms necessary to co-manage ecosystems and species require the support of appropriate legislation, the allocation of enough resources, public awareness and
education, as well as regional collaboration mechanisms and networks to allow mutual benefits and an effective implementation of measures to protect Mediterranean livelihoods. Enhanced policy measures and management plans need to be deployed to be effective for people (in sustainable development) and for nature (biodiversity protection) at Mediterranean level.
Together with the Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection Community featured by the PANACeA project, the SEArica Intergroup has taken the initiative to organise an event to discuss solutions to conserve biodiversity and increase the resilience of natural resources in the Mediterranean Sea with major stakeholders such as European Institutions, public authorities, scientific institutions, regional organisations, protected area managers. It will also be an opportunity for the Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection Community actors to present their findings, and their recommendations found in various Mediterranean countries, at protected area levels.
Through the recognition of a common initiative, the main goal of this event will be to encourage a stronger commitment of all policy makers, scientists and environmental actors, to enter into a tighter collaboration and enhance the dialogue for a better understanding and application of an ecosystem-based management in the development and implementation of policies at all levels, a prerequisite to ensure the viability of our ecosystems.
The draft agenda of the conference will shortly be available.

What is an Intergroup?
The Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup is one of the 28 Intergroups that were approved in December 2024 by the Conference of Presidents for the 10th legislature of the European Parliament. Intergroups can be formed by MEPs from any political group and any parliamentary committee with a view to holding informal exchanges of views on particular issues and promoting contact between MEPs and civil society.
